The Lab Tests You Should Run Each Year

“Is your ship off course”?

As a functional nutritional therapy practitioner, I have the privilege of using several lab tests with my clients to help determine where they stand in “the hallway of life.” I encourage my clients to run these labs annually to see what the status is of key, anti-aging and anti-disease markers.

I use an analogy that goes like this:

An ocean liner is leaving New York harbor, headed for London. If the navigator is just one degree off course, it won’t look like much to the passengers watching ocean waves pass by. But one degree off course at the beginning of the trip can result in a massive detour, with passengers ending up in Iceland, not the destination of their choosing.

By paying attention to your “course” settings now—something we can see in your annual labs—we can determine if you are on course for wellness and vitality or headed somewhere you don’t want to go!

In my practice, I look at bloodwork from a nutritional perspective. Blood chemistries offer an opportunity to identify imbalances before they become serious conditions. By correcting these imbalances from the inside out, you allow your body to do what it does best: heal.  When you are outside of the optimal range, it means you are trending toward imbalance. My work is to help you restore homeostasis before it becomes a bigger issue.

What am I Looking For in My Testing?

  • ELEVATED GLUCOSE & INSULIN LEVELS can indicate metabolic syndrome, obesity, and high blood pressure.  Are you headed to Diabetes World?

  • ELEVATED INFLAMMATORY MARKERS such as HsCRP, Homocysteine, HbA1C, and Red Blood Cell Width (RBW). Chronic inflammation is at the root of all disease. Could it be cardiovascular? Digestive? Chronic inflammation speeds up the aging process and shortens your life.

  • THYROID MARKERS that are out of line can be an indication of hormone imbalances, weight gain, and nutritional deficiencies.

  • IMMUNE AND ANEMIA MARKERS that are out of line can tell me about chronic infections hiding in the background causing fatigue, brain fog, and “always feeling sick.”

  • Last year, in my clients who brought in tests done through their doctors, only about 1 in 10 panels included VITAMIN D levels. And what have we heard about the importance of Vitamin D? This is an essential nutrient for a strong immune system. It’s also critical for bone health. Yet, many insurance companies won’t include it for coverage. (People, It’s an $18 add-on!) This is an important marker to test.

Another fabulous tool in my kit is the Oxford Laboratories MRT – FOOD SENSITIVITY & INTOLERANCE TESTING. I’m not talking allergies, you know; eat a peanut and stop breathing.

I’m referring to a mediated immune response to a food you are ingesting that is causing chronic inflammation and compromised immunity. Very few folks connect the dots of what they’ve eaten to symptoms such as: rashes, hives, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, and/or joint pain, because most often the symptoms take days to appear.

When gut issues are a problem—IBS, diarrhea, constipation, I like to run a GI MAP OR STOOL TEST. So much of our population has digestive “failure” or dysbiosis, and improper stomach acid (not enough), pathogens, parasites and bacterial overgrowth are always the issue and can be discovered with one sample. Once identified, a natural supplemental protocol is put in place to eradicate said bugs. Imagine bathroom freedom!
